Have we let the recession curb our love of eating out?
We seem still to the midst of a recession with eating out and hotel occupancy rates dropping nationally, but the experience in Wales suggests that people who like their food and drink are still willing to eat out, provided the quality is right. A subtle difference exists between price and quality.
Luxury hotels Wales or upmarket restaurants both share the same commitment to quality, which has more to do with their inherent sense of style and purpose than any notions of luxury. A modest B&B can still offer excellent quality, especially when it comes to food and service.
It may be true that dark economic skies are still around, but rays of light are beginning to burst through. People who love eating good quality food as part of their holidays in Wales still appreciate those whose passion is sourcing, preparing and serving it. The best restaurants have established their reputations by offering their customers a mixture of fine service and quality product.
Wales has always had a reputation for excellence in providing food and drink from restaurants that show attention to detail, showing awareness to environmental issues in sourcing their produce locally whenever possible. Better quality of food and drink, and importantly the service, are all the hallmarks of the way the Welsh conduct their eating establishments. A commitment to sustainability can go by the wayside when profits are under pressure, but many restaurants in Wales see these recessionary times as an opportunity to put pressure on suppliers to match their ethical position. The times are certainly tough at the moment, but there are signs that are clear to the restaurantaurs. Delivering quality at a fair price remains the key to attracting customers who’ll continue to regard eating out as one of the best things to do in Wales.
